Macallister: “No longer the underdogs”
DYLAN Macallister could have retired at the end of last season – the local junior went full circle, returning to Cromer Park at the twilight of his career and won an unforgettable grand final last September at Leichhardt Oval.
Thankfully for his teammates and Manly United fans, the 35-year-old quickly committed to at least one more season.
“After getting the all clear from my wife, I was always going to come back,” the striker joked this week.
“Retirement didn’t really cross my mind, my passion for the game remains.
“I’m thankful pre-season is over, now we can get down to business and look to defend our title.”
The path to glory for Manly begins this Saturday night on home soil versus APIA Leichhardt.
In a mouth watering grand final replay, Macallister knows the Tigers will be keen to topple the hosts to kick-start their 2018 campaign.
“Losing a grand final on penalties is a very tough way to come up short,” he said.
“It happened to me back in the day, I still think what may have been.
“They (APIA) no doubt will be firing on all cylinders.
“It will be a cracking match and with the club celebrating Back to Manly Day, a big crowd will be on show.
“We welcome the target on our back, we will no longer be the underdogs, which suits us fine.”
Kick-off on Saturday night is 7pm.
