Macarthur punish wasteful Manly United
MANLY United’s premiership defence began in stuttering fashion after losing 2-1 to arch rivals Macarthur on Sunday afternoon at Cromer Park.
Rose Galea and Leena Khamis scored either side of halftime to give the Rams a two goal buffer, only to see Chloe O’Brien peg one back early in the second stanza for the hosts.
United pressed for an equaliser leading into the final whistle, but it wasn’t to be.
Remy Siemsen will still be wondering how she didn’t open her 2018 account, with the dynamic striker desperately unlucky on a handful of occasions.
Coach Chris Williams wasn’t overly concerned, labelling the clinical nature of Macarthur’s players the difference.
“We probably created enough chances to win two games,” he said.
“We were slow to get into the contest – some of the girls are lacking match fitness, which will come over the next few weeks.
“Sophie Harding and Jane Vanzino started for us, and we also gave Grace Arnold and Gemma Van Weeren a taste of first grade off the bench.
“Ultimately we just didn’t finish our chances, and they (Macarthur) did.”
Manly travel to the Shire to take on newly promoted Sutherland this Sunday at the Harrie Denning Centre from 3pm.
