MUFC Profile: Daniel Alessi
Following a quick conversation with head coach Paul Dee, Manly United was always going to be the destination for Daniel Alessi this season.
The talented defender, who made his A-League debut for Western Sydney Wanderers at the age of 16, arrived at Cromer Park seeking consistent game time.
Approaching the halfway point of the campaign, Alessi feels he is hitting his straps, illustrated by his recognition as the Premier Automotive player of the week in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Sydney United.
“As soon as Paul (Dee) told me there was a spot at Manly, I was never going elsewhere,” the 20-year-old said this week.
“The team plays a good brand of football and the boys have been very welcoming.
“I’ve bought into the culture and I’m confident we will consistently pick up points leading into the semi-finals.”
Alessi was blooded into the NSW Institute of Sport program in his early teens before he was recruited by the Wanderers.
He spent three seasons under Tony Popovic before jumping ship to Newcastle.
“I loved being at the Wanderers, and was fortunate to play in the A-League, Asian Champions League and the Club World Cup,” he said.
“I saw an opportunity for more game time with the Jets, but unfortunately I was injured my first year there and once I was fit it was very difficult to break into the first team.
“Ernie (Merrick) suggested I get game time elsewhere, and being from the north shore, Manly was the obvious fit.”
Beyond 2018, Alessi is open to offers.
“I’m very happy at Manly, we will see what happens I guess,” he said.
“My body is holding up well and the competition for spots also keeps me on my toes, I know I have to perform each week.”
