Manly United FC Under 16s Win The Inaugral Coast Cup
The Manly United U16 team swept all before them to win the inaugural Coast Cup on the Central Coast this week.
The Coast Cup was a select tournament played on the Central Coast involving U16 teams from Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers, Central Coast Mariners, Newcastle Jets and four NSW NPL teams (Manly, Marconi, Northern Tigers and the Edgeworth Eagles).
Manly finished second in its group after defeating the Central Coast Mariners 1-0 and drawing with the Newcastle Jets (1-1) and Edgeworth Eagles (1-1).
That saw Manly United pitched against Sydney FC in the semi final and the scores finished 0-0 after what was an absorbing contest where both sides had opportunities to win the match. Manly goalkeeper Harry Acquilina was inspirational, pulling off three brilliant saves to send the teams into a penalty shootout, which Manly won 5-4 to progress to the final.
The Final was an equally tough match, the 5th game in two days for the teams, but it was Manly United that found something special to defeat the Newcastle Jets 1-0. The winning goal scored by Ben Gibson after an exquisite through ball by Milan Subotic, put the strikers through on goal where he made no mistake.
Congratulations also goes to the coaching team of James Snedden and Louis Dimitropoulos, for keeping the players motivated and focussed throughout the tournament while physio Alana played an important role in ensuring the players did the rights things off the pitch with recovery.
