One To Watch – Sophie Harding
Sophie Harding is a patient footballer.
At 18, time is on her side as she embarks on what she hopes will eventually be a career in the professional ranks.
Born in England, Sophie moved to Australia when she was six.
She cut her teeth playing club football with Harbord Seasiders United and Brookvale.
“I was then picked in the Manly United train on squad and played from the under-13s to 16s,” she said.
“After that I was given an opportunity with Football NSW Institute out at Blacktown.
“It was full on, but I learnt heaps.”
A burning desire to succeed in the senior ranks at Manly saw the teenager return to Cromer Park last season.
Breaking into Chris Williams’ star studded first grade women’s squad is no easy feat, with Harding realistic to know she has to bide her time.
“I’ve really enjoyed this season,” said the winger or striker.
“I’m also juggling my HSC studies, so I’ve got a fair bit on.
“Eventually I would like to play in the W-League and for the Young Matildas, so I need to keep working hard and be consistent.”
