Travis Oughtred’s blossoming career in real estate
Life has changed dramatically for Travis Oughtred.
As a teenager he was on the books of Sydney United 58 FC and used to love beating Manly United, or as they were known back in the late-1990s, the Manly Warringah Dolphins.
Fast forward to 2018 and the classy defender is firmly a part of the northern beaches bubble – and loving it.
“If you said to me back in the day I would eventually play football for Manly (United) and live in Newport I would have thought you were a lunatic,” Oughtred said.
“Everything is relative I guess – in my late teens I played for Northern Spirit and loved going to Avalon or Bilgola Beach after training.
“Over the last few years, the northern beaches has felt like somewhere I belong.”
Come Tuesday, Oughtred’s ties to the peninsula will strengthen even further when he begins a new role in real estate with McGrath at Avalon.
“I was working for them (McGrath) in Rouse Hill, so when the opportunity came up to work around the corner I jumped at it,” he said.
“I’m really looking forward to it, I pride myself on being a people’s person.
“I’ve only been in the (real estate) game for six months, so it has all been a bit of a whirlwind so far.”
Oughtred was also brave enough to change careers at the ripe old age of 32.
“I was with Toyota for 12 years,” he said.
“Initially I was selling cars then I moved into the logistics side of the company for eight years.
“I suppose it was a gamble to try something new a bit later in life, but I gave myself six months to see how it all panned out.
“If it didn’t work out, the plan was to re-evaluate on the run.”
The affable 33-year-old believes the key to selling houses is relating to people.
“You need to be genuine and friendly,” he said.
“Also life is short, so you need to surround yourself with good people and try and make a difference.”
Oughtred will be a key figure on Saturday night when Manly United take on the Stallions at Marconi Stadium from 7pm.
