Manly United launched their 2026 NPL NSW Men’s campaign in the perfect fashion, with the 1st Grade side delivering a composed and commanding 1–0 victory over St George City FA at Cromer Park.
A first-half finish from Max Martinello proved the difference on the night, as new head coach Vlado Knezevic marked his competitive debut with a well-earned three points and plenty of positives to build on.
Following a minute’s silence to honour Manly United life member Colin May, the hosts set the tone early, taking control of possession and territory from the opening whistle. Chances soon followed, with Will Faulder glancing narrowly wide before Will McCreery and Ayumu Kimura both went close as Manly’s pressure mounted.
The breakthrough arrived in the 32nd minute and was no more than the team deserved. Martinello reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, improvising brilliantly to fire home and ignite the Cromer Park crowd.
Manly continued to dictate terms after the break, pushing for a second through Kimura, McCreery and substitute Kakeru Ono, whose long-range strike forced a full stretch save late on.
The visitors showed glimpses of quality throughout the contest, but they remained limited on chances and unable to break down a well-organised Manly defence.
It was a professional, assured opening-night performance for the home side – and a positive start to the Knezevic era for Manly United.
Afterwards, coach Vlado commented “St George were very difficult today. You have to fight on the pitch, and the boys did exactly that. I’m proud they got the win”.
Maximum Points for Manly
In the fixture’s earlier game, the U20s looked equally composed, coming from a goal down to overcome the visitors with a 2–1 victory. Stephan De Robiller and Jett Kaines both hit the target to seal the win, helping to ensure all six points on offer in Round 1 came Manly’s way.
A positive start for the Manly Senior Men’s squad. Next up: Blacktown City FC for Round 2!
