Manly United’s unbeaten start to the 2026 NPL NSW campaign came to an end on Friday night, with a 2–0 defeat away to Sydney United 58 in a match that proved a stern test – particularly after going down to ten men before the break.
The hosts struck early, capitalising in the seventh minute after a driving run through midfield released Tomoki Wada, who finished clinically to give Sydney United the advantage.
Manly responded positively. A series of corners midway through the half put the home side under pressure, with Adam Pavlesic forced to command his area strongly as the visitors looked for a foothold in the contest.
Sydney United extended their lead in the 33rd minute, finishing off another quick transition to make it 2–0. Mackenzie Syron was called into action soon after, producing a sharp save from close range to keep Manly within touching distance heading into half-time.
The game shifted decisively just before the break when William McCreery was shown a straight red card following an off-the-ball incident, leaving Manly with a mountain to climb for the entire second half.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Manly refused to retreat.
Early in the second period, Luca Krizan produced a heroic goal-line clearance, diving to head the ball away and prevent a third. Aaron O’Driscoll followed with a crucial last-ditch intervention later in the half, highlighting the defensive resolve on display.
Manly continued to search for a way back into the contest. Benjamin Koop came closest in the 73rd minute, his effort flashing narrowly wide as the visitors pushed forward with intent despite being a man down.
While Sydney United managed the final stages professionally, there was no shortage of character from Manly. Reduced to ten men for over half of the game, the squad showed resilience, defensive grit and a willingness to compete until the final whistle.
A close contest for the U20s
Earlier in the evening, the U20s were involved in a five-goal thriller, eventually going down 3–2 in a tightly contested battle. Ryan Parkes and Lewis Morsella were on target for Manly, with the side pushing right to the final whistle in what was a spirited performance on the road.
Despite the results, there were clear signs of fight and the Senior Men’s squad has plenty to build on as the campaign progresses.
