Manly United produced a strong performance and created plenty of chances in their Round Six home fixture on Friday night but were ultimately denied, falling 1–0 to Western Sydney Wanderers.
In a game that could easily have gone the other way, Manly created the better of the early opportunities and looked the more likely side for large periods, particularly throughout a strong first-half showing.
Ayumu Kimura set the tone early with a driving run from halfway, while Jasper Chipman, Luka Krizan and Ben Koop also had promising opportunities before the break, with Manly unfortunate not to take a lead into half-time.
After the break, Manly continued to push forward with intent. Jesse Piriz tested the Wanderers’ defence with a powerful effort, while substitute Stephan De Robillard injected energy into the attack and created further chances as the home side searched for a breakthrough.
Despite Manly’s momentum, it was the visitors who found the decisive moment. A well-taken solo effort in the 77th minute proved the difference in what remained a tightly contested fixture.
The Manly boys upped their pressing until the final whistle, with Saxon Hillyer going close late on, but they remained unable to find a way past a resolute Wanderers defence.
The result didn’t reflect the balance of play, and the opportunities created could have easily told a different story.
U20s capitalise on pressure to take the win
The U20s worked tirelessly in their earlier fixture, with sustained attacking pressure creating several opportunities for the hosts. Aston Hulme opened the scoring in the first half, before Doug John extended the lead after the break to secure the victory.
Looking ahead, Manly will take plenty from the squad’s performance, with the energy shown at Cromer Park setting a strong platform ahead of back-to-back away fixtures before a return home in early April.
Next Senior Men’s game is against SD Raiders at Ernie Smith Reserve on Saturday, March 21 – KO 5pm (U20s 7pm).
