A ‘Good Friday’ at Cromer Park as Manly Teams Shine

Easter treats arrived early at Cromer Park last Friday, when Manly United’s 1st Grade Women and Men served up a double helping of football for the local fans.

With a lively atmosphere around the ground, both teams certainly put on a fine display, with the women showing dominance throughout their game and a late equaliser denying the men what should have been a well-deserved victory.

Senior Women Deliver Statement Win

Manly United’s Senior Women produced a superb performance to secure a commanding 4–0 victory over Western City Rangers.

From the outset, Manly looked sharp and intent, creating chances through Alexia Forner and Emily Minett, while Sarah Whelan also came close as the hosts applied early pressure. Despite several strong saves from the Rangers goalkeeper, the breakthrough finally came just before halftime. Ariella Cabezas sparked the move, with Minett driving forward before finding Nicole Stuart, who calmly finished to give Manly a deserved lead.

The second half began in the same vein, and it didn’t take long for Manly to extend their advantage. Forner played a perfectly weighted ball through for Stuart, who showed composure and class to secure her second of the night.

Manly’s control continued as Minett remained a constant threat, and from the resulting pressure came a third goal—Grace Arnold’s delivery finding Chloe O’Brien, who rose well to head home.

Arnold then capped off an outstanding performance of her own, scoring directly from a corner late in the match to seal a comprehensive 4–0 result.

Late Drama Denies Manly Men

In the Men’s First Grade clash, Manly were left to settle for a 1–1 draw with Sydney FC in a match that saw the hosts control large periods but ultimately denied victory in the dying moments.

After an even opening, Manly began to take control, creating a number of chances through Jasper Chipman, Jesse Piriz and Matthew O’Donoghue.

The breakthrough came just before halftime when Darcy Burgess cut inside and fired a strike that took a deflection, finding the back of the net to give Manly a deserved 1–0 lead.

Manly carried that momentum into the second half, continuing to press and create opportunities. Aaron O’Driscoll came close, while further chances fell to Burgess and Stephan de Robillard as the home side pushed to extend their advantage.

A golden opportunity arrived late when Ayumu Kimura met a precise cross, but his header drifted wide. Ultimately, that chance proved costly, with the visitors finding an equaliser in stoppage time to snatch a point in heart-breaking fashion.

Strong Results Across the Age Groups

Earlier, Manly’s GYL squads set the tone, with three of their four games resulting in wins against Western City Rangers. In the other Senior fixtures, the Women’s U23s drew 1–1, with Eva Morgante finding the back of the net for the locals. On Cromer Park 2, the Men’s U20s secured a 1–0 win over Sydney FC through a Henry Rumler goal, with Harry Turner keeping a clean sheet between the posts.

With five wines, two draws and one loss, it was most definitely Manly’s day.

Aside from the results, Friday was a clear reminder of what Cromer Park is all about – gutsy performances on the pitch and maximum energy in the stands. The Senior squads will be keen to take that energy with them on next weekend’s away fixtures.

Our next fixtures: Senior Men face Sydney Olympic FC at Belmore on Saturday 11th, while the Senior Women take on the Gladesville Ravens at Christie Park on Sunday 12th.
