Manly suffer defeat at Popondetta Park

ericsubijano · Jun 23, 2025 ·

One goal was enough for Mt Druitt Town Rangers to secure all three points at Popondetta Park in their Sunday evening NPL Women’s NSW clash with Manly United.

It was veteran Leena Khamis whose goal was the difference early in the second half, and that’s all there was between the two teams at the end.

Manly finished the game with one player less after Grace Arnold was sent off for denial of a clear goal scoring opportunity, after a foul on Khamis.

It was the home team who had the first chance of the game. Roukayah Al Fararjeh found space on the left after a Khamis pass, and the winger’s shot deflected just wide of the target.

Chloe O’Brien was everywhere for the visitors and almost caught Renee Krstanovska out with a long distance strike, the Rangers keeper retrieving and holding the ball well.

The Rangers then almost took advantage of a couple of Manly errors. First, Khamis found space just outside the area, but rushed her lobbed attempt and it went wide. Next, O’Brien gave a sloppy pass in midfield straight to Khamis, who nutmegged Arnold before playing in Al Fararjeh, and the flying winger should have done better.

Nicole Stuart then had an attempt for Manly 10 minutes from half time, Krstanovska saving again.

The home side opened the second half well, the lively Adelaide Wyrzynski shooting towards goal and Nicole Simonsen saving.

Mt Druitt were in front shortly afterwards. Ena Harada played a delightful ball through for Al Fararjeh, then the speedster squared for the oncoming Khamis, who made no mistake with the finish.

With about 25 minutes remaining on the clock, the job got even harder for the visitors. Khamis was played through and got goalside of Arnold, who then brought down the striker just as she approached the box. Referee Isabella Mossin had no choice and sent the central defender from the field.

It was almost double trouble for Manly as Harada’s strike from the ensuing free kick was tipped over the bar by an excellent Simonsen save.

From this point however, Manly seemed to come to life. Mt Druitt sat deeper, allowing the visitors to hold possession and try to create opportunities. Daisy Arrowsmith had a chance almost straight after the red card, her shot going just over the bar from an area where she should have hit the target.

Khamis was definitely in the mood and causing Manly problems, this time trying to catch Simonsen out at the near post, only for the United keeper to get down well and save.

Manly pushed hard for an equaliser but could only muster a long range effort from Sienna Dale as the Rangers held on for the victory.

Manly narrowly defeated by Mt Druitt

ericsubijano · Jun 22, 2025 ·

Manly United were defeated 1-0 by Mt Druitt Town Rangers in the Saturday night NPL Men’s NSW game at Popondetta Park.

The Rangers started the better of the two teams and had a couple of half-chances, all of which failed to trouble Manly United keeper Levi Kaye.

Manly United soon countered and had their first opportunity with Darcy Burgess sending his effort over the bar early in the first half.

Next, Rangers’ Lachlan Vasiliou wriggled into space and curved an effort which fizzed wide of Kaye’s right post.

Following a series of missed efforts, the game saw its first goal and it was the Rangers who struck in the 24th minute, with Vasiliou controlling the ball well and smashing a shot into the top corner.

Not wanting to settle for a one goal lead, the Rangers pushed for a second as Garang Awac curled a shot which rattled the apex of the bar then was swept away.

However, the visitors finished the half with a flurry. Manly whistled a few balls across the area which evaded a touch, and their equalising goal went begging as the whistle sounded for the break.

As the second half commenced, Vasiliou tried his luck as he cut inside his defender and unfurled a strike which flashed wide.

Manly began to find a rhythm and worked the ball around the box, then Matthew O’Donoghue smashed a shot which fell wide of the mark.

The Rangers then almost doubled their advantage from a set piece. Shayden Sampow’s free-kick bounced around the area, before Thomas Lopez headed straight at the keeper. After that close call, substitute John Azar floated in a set piece for the Rangers which found Zac Sfiligoi, and his deflected effort was turned away by Kaye.

Heading into the final ten minutes, Manly rung the changes by bringing on Taiga Kawano, Farah Koko and Benjamin Koop to chase a result. They won a series of corners, but Rangers keeper Dylan Niski was up to the task. The visitors then had another set piece, but Jesse Piriz’s thumping shot fell straight to Niski.

Mt Druitt then held on for six minutes of stoppage time and earned their first home win of the season.

“It’s been a long time coming for us, people thought I was hoodwinking people saying it was coming but it did today,” said Rangers coach Andrew Montgomery.

“Things went our way this week which haven’t before, and might be the catalyst to turn it around. Credit to Manly, they threw the kitchen sink at us but we held firm, including the young boys who played up, but we expected that.”

Manly interim coach Jimmy Snedden reflected on the positives, despite the result.

“I thought it was one of our best footballing performances of the season.

“We had all the ball in the attacking third but couldn’t score.

“I didn’t think they had many chances outside of a few set pieces, but we weren’t good enough to break them down.”

Thank you, Pat

ericsubijano · Jun 18, 2025 ·

Manly United Football Club wishes to announce that the club’s Men’s First Grade Head Coach Patrick Zwaanswijk is leaving.

Pat made the club aware he won’t be continuing in 2026 due to personal reasons, and the club has made the difficult decision to implement its succession plan immediately.

Pat has been an integral part of the Manly United family, leading our First Grade squad for nearly 3 seasons.

He has been a passionate supporter of our football vision and has been committed to bringing our local youth players through the system, resulting in 14 youth players debuting in First Grade during his time here. He has also been a great mentor to our younger coaches, and we thank him for his contributions to our club and wish him all the very best.

Plans for the recruitment of a new First Grade Head Coach are now underway, and further updates will be shared with our players and supporters in due course. In the meantime, First Grade Assistant Coach Jimmy Snedden will take the role on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.

Manly fall to Sydney FC

ericsubijano · Jun 16, 2025 ·

Manly United were defeated 6-0 by Sydney FC in the Sunday evening NPL Men’s NSW game at a rainy Cromer Park.

It was a match to remember for Sydney FC’s Mathias Macallister, who scored five times in a memorable performance.

Early on, Manly flyer Peter Kekeris couldn’t quite grip the ball with the goal beckoning as the hosts looked to open up the match. Rocco Pelle then came close for Manly as he was unable to sneak his header past Alexander Zaverdinos from close range.

After that, the Sky Blues tore the game wide open with two blistering strikes in the 6th and 9th minute.

First, Taye Hedley made no mistake with his finish, courtesy of a brilliant ball inside the box, laid on by Corey Cronin. Macallister then continued to shake the game up when his pinpoint header found the top corner.

Kekeris continued to be a force for Manly, despite the scoreline, when his lively run down the sidelines in the 17th minute almost resulted in something, only for Ethan Dyer to clear his pass out of play.

It continued to be a largely Sydney FC dominated half, and they perhaps should have had a one man advantage in the 32nd minute when Bilal Belkadi caught Joseph Calusic’s feet.

Manly started the second half far better than they ended the first, as Harry Van Der Saag went inches away from curling his shot into the bottom corner.

However, it didn’t take long for the young Sydney FC boys to flex their attacking muscle, and in the 50th minute Hedley forced a diving two-handed save from Levi Kaye.

Four minutes later, Sydney FC lit up once again with some quality attacking play. Lachlan Middleton placed a pinpoint through ball to Macallister, who beat several Manly players before scoring.

Macallister incredibly completed his hat trick in the 58th minute from the edge of the box, after he ran between Aaron O’Driscoll and Alen Aganovic before blasting his shot past Kaye.

The hat trick didn’t stop Macallister from continuing to cause havoc and in the 65th minute he had four for the evening, after his fancy footwork in the box saw him evade multiple Manly players before he unfurled a shot into the far corner.

Sensationally, in the 75th minute Macallister locked down his fifth goal of the game when he breezed past O’Driscoll and Aganovic, leaving Kaye unable to reach the ball in time.

Post-game, Macallister was quick to praise his teammates and was delighted with Sydney’s performance, especially after the game was delayed by two hours due to lightning in the area.

“For us this is the standard. This is what we’re working on in training and the boys brought it.

“The weather delay didn’t impact us. The long wait time in the locker rooms didn’t change anything. Our game plan was to get them early and that’s what we did.

“While for me, personally, I’m happy with how we played, and I want to score goals. We’re putting something special together and we are aiming to be finals bound for sure.”
